2nd Trait: Motivation
Motivation is one of the most visible markers of high-performing representatives.
It reflects self-confidence, the desire to succeed, and the ability to push beyond limits.
If you're not naturally competitive or have never felt the satisfaction of achieving an ambitious goal, it may be time to reassess your career motivations in sales.
Sales is like athletics:
The rewards are outstanding when you win...but failures are inevitable. A sales professional, just like an athlete, must be able to learn from failures, rise above them, and try again until the desired result is achieved.
Comfort Zone or Growth Zone? After more than twenty years training sales teams across a wide variety of markets and industries, I can quickly identifiy representatives who genuinely want to grow...and those who prefer to stay in their comfort zone. And why stay in the comfort zone? Because it's
comfortable.
There is no right or wrong here. The real question is:
Are you satisfied with your results?
When everything is going well, it's normal to feel less motivated to learn new approaches. However, it's crucial to recognize that:
- Buyers change
- The business environment evolves constantly
- What worked yesterday doesn't always work today
Our beliefs influence our attitudes. Our attitudes influence our behaviors. Our behaviors influence our results. If your results aren't where you want them to be, it becomes essential to examine the beliefs you hold about:
- your organization
- your products and services
- your clients
- your skills
- your approaches
- your prospecting
Negative beliefs weaken motivation. Positive beliefs create powerful momentum. Ask yourself :
Do my beliefs propel me...or hold me back?
Fear no. 1: Fear of Failure
In my training groups, I often notice resistance when we begin working on
setting precise goals. This resistance is almost always linked to one fear:
the fear of failure.
Yet. the clearer the goals, the clearer the strategies, the clearer the
how ...The stronger the motivation becomes.
What truly motivates a representative or expert consultant is:
- a clear goal
- a clear direction
- a clear plan
Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound goals create the perfect recipe for motivation. They strengthen the confidence needed to achieve them
The Results Speak For Themselves
After my training programs, participants often share:
- that they finally secured the meeting they had been trying to get in the past
- that their revenue increased significantly within a year
- that they developed new markets
- that they transformed their approach and confidence
These results are not accidental. They come from:
- Their openness
- their willingness to try new techniques
- their commitment to practicing in the field with new tools.
